
A 31-year educator, coach, and health education leader, he is the 2026 SHAPE America National Health Education Teacher of the Year and the 2023 Minnesota SHAPE Health Teacher of the Year. He serves as Vice President-Elect for Health for MNSHAPE, was a member of Minnesota’s Health Standards Creation Committee, co-hosts the HPE Hangout Podcast, and is a founding board member of Honest Sex Ed Minnesota.
As a presenter, he has shared innovative practices at state, regional, and national conferences, including SHAPE America, MNSHAPE, and the Best Practices in Health and Physical Education Conference, as well as several state and regional conferences. His presentations have focused on skills-based health education, student choice, assessment, hands-on learning, and the nationally recognized #10thGradeChefs program.
In his free time, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife of 27 years, Michele, and 2 children, Danielle, a 4th-grade teacher (Baltic, SD) and volleyball coach, and Tyler, a doctoral student in the PT program at Creighton University (Omaha, NE).
