Dr. Pennington is Lead Teacher at the DREAM Academy, an alternative secondary school in Illinois’ largest district outside of Chicago, Elgin School District U-46. She has previously taught physical education at all grade levels, K-higher education including adapted PE and in an alternative environment, served as a mentor specialist, instructional coach, and Teacher Leader for her district’s Teacher Mentor Program. Dr. Pennington was the 2023 SHAPE America C&I SIG scholar lecturer and was recently awarded the Illinois State board of Education’s Teacher Award of Excellence. Her published research centers on teacher change, teacher socialization, and SEL for teachers. She has presented on these topics as well as trauma-sensitive instructional strategies at a variety of state level and national conferences. Dr. Pennington holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Eastern Illinois University and a PhD in Kinesiology (pedagogy) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
